Finally I get this publish, still on this weekend. Sorry if you guys were waiting for it but here it goes. I’ll first explain the general idea of zine and how I want to make it. Then going on to how I will try to give it exposure and to sell. The ending will be the general idea of the whole thing.

I hate writing something formal but for the sake of making it understandable, it will be written in a well-mannered form but still with my style of writing.

p.s. if you want to read about the idea of the zine and skip the part where I explain about the zine, (which I guess many of you will have your own idea about it) scroll towards the final 3 paragraph of the whole post.

What is a zine?

The general understanding of zine is actually, as a mini form of the magazine. Close but zine is actually the collection of the public idea and the best thing about it is, cheap and easy to be made. The range of type of zine is up to one own desire as long the final shape of the zine is small and easy to be kept.

How to make it?

Well as a collection of idea, mainly it will be designed and publish by our own hands making it a very interesting project. The collection of idea will be wide but still not running away from the theme of the zine itself. Media such as pictures and writings will be the easiest to get and tonnes to be submitted since that is what basically what can be printed on a paper. But then again we do not limit ourselves to just that because the people have basic curiosity of looking up what they cannot get. So instead of just words and images, links to video, blogs, music will be welcomed too.

I did say I have a team that publish a zine so here is basically what we do. We are a team full of art lovers and we discuss a lot about what art really is and how we want to make our zine as a phenomenon in the art world. For us, art means everything that you put passion into. That is what our zine is all about, presenting, publishing, spreading any forms of passion that people submit to us.

How to make it public?

This is easy and well, since we have internets and other stuffs, I rather not say much because I bet you guys have tonnes of idea about this.

How to sell?

Before telling you my idea about this, let me first tell you the general idea of me and my team’s zine. First of all, we never had any intention of selling our zines since we believe that we are doing something we love and we want to share it. Of course we were happy and people that get our zines were smiling from ear to ear since we use quality paper and the content was quite high in quality, meaning the image resolution and other stuffs. But then again we were using our own money and that make us being held back a lot. So we change our way but still not to forget to provide a quality zine, we start selling.

The zine will be on sale so we can cover the basic printing fees and other matter regarding towards the making of the zine.

Now that settled, here comes to why I want to create a zine which its sole purpose is to promote architecture. I’ve been in the world of architecture since I was young and very passionate about it too. But the thing is now, knowing the dirty world of architecture where the old guns would say, “It’s quite normal to treat your client to get a project.”  got me thinking. We are not doing it right here. Having problems with students getting a hard time with finding a job after graduation is one thing, having the right amount of pay is another big thing. Many other things, I leave you to find it yourself as you are going about to experience this thing we love or happen to stumble into.

This zine will promotes architecture and the truth about how people should look at architects. We will get students project, writings, photographs, idea, law and basically anything that have to do with the architectural world, put it in a tiny cool booklet and let the world know how this thing change the way we look at the world today.

For now the zine will be progressing in a slow manner since I still don’t have a team and still finding ways to make this thing come true. So if by chance you guys happen to read this, spread the word and you can contact me for any more information via twitter or facebook or to make it even more old school, my email.

Thank you for reading. =)

“What is architecture exactly? If art is nothing but significant, and science on the other hand, is the truth of everything that is happening around us, what does both combined mean? The significance of everything that is true?”

“I am an architecture student but as I continue on this path it seem that I was not right about it after all.”

Those are the words that often echo in the life of architecture student. But then again most of them turn out to be an architect as well. I am no different than the words spoken as I have tonnes of interest in something else. Most of it have to do with arts, or might as well everything that I wanted to do have to do with the heart of an artist. But in the end I choose architecture just because I love the art of thinking more.

Everyone have their own individual hobby as to speak, I myself love photography, music, writing and something else. But what does it have to do with architecture. How does it help having something else besides architecture as an interest? I would say a lot.

Tonnes of people I knew of in the world of architecture love something else more than the subject itself and in the end they realise and pursue it and became successful. Realising what you want to do is very important as it may lead to realising what is more important. Once, I had an argument of either choosing passion or money. I choose passion. However, it is never wrong to choose money too. It really is up to the person own decision.

For I live according to my passion and I wanted happiness to whatever I will encounter, someone else choose to live in hardship and follow their passion afterwards. In the end it is all about passion. Just so you know the debate about passion or money started off with, “if I follow my passion I do not think I will be successful, so I reject your words.” It is how you wanted it to be.

Eventually the world of architecture in Malaysia lacks the eager to do more than just presenting a beautiful project. The thought process being put into a design still lacks in many ways possible and for that the younger generation of architect here are getting less acknowledge due to lack of creativeness that was supposed to be in the package of becoming an architect.

Most of us had been thought to do our work just as what does our lecturers want without putting much effort to what the students want. We learn so much yet we learn nothing in the terms of being the architect that we wanted to be.

We have this general idea of becoming one of the sought after architect, to be called the master architect which are look up for their great knowledge and thought that were being put into their design. The dream to be someone like Antonio Gaudi, Renzo Piano, Albert Khan, Alvar Aalto and so many more yet the only thing that we learn is how to just imitate their work rather that asking question of why do they do the things they do. Lacking in so many ways possible, our education system, in term of architecture studies now are more to producing future workers and just that. No thinkers, no artist, no scientist, not even a person who critics.

Maybe what we really need now is someone who can actually talk about design rather than someone who can sell design. You say we talk about design but do we really in the actual working world do that?

I have a lecturer who recommend me moving away for my studies just because my way of doing my design is not acknowledge much here. But then again why don’t they change? I have this idea of changing the world through the means of architecture as it is the only way to prove that we existed in this age of man. Now thinking again, what will architecture be in the future scares me as somehow, thinking all the possibilities of man are getting afraid of changes will never run away will only just makes the world of architecture be a never ending cycle of repetition of the past and stop evolving.

Part 3

As one proposed the idea of making the past as present, one never thought that the past may want the past of their past to be their present. One may talk about the great past that once lived by great person known by the present. A talk about historical value of one such proposed ‘golden age’ may never be the same of any other person. As to the extend now, people don’t usually realise what is the importance of reading about the past and translate it towards the present now. And the now rarely thinks about the significant of present for the future.

Once a room, a space, a furniture, was dignified as to value each other as to compliment the feeling of one will experience inside it, or just looking at it from outside, or even just by passing through it. A genuine artist knows well enough the importance of walking instead of just driving past a street so to know very well and experience every small details of the place. Though it may seem a little bit tiring or even boring, one may never really know the true value of the place unless one gave time to feel it. But now what kind of feeling one may feel will always be different in many ways but never will it be far from others.

An experience is somehow evaluates by the qualities of time spent towards a certain kind of atmosphere. A room may seem a little bit scary if one is never brave enough to walk in a room full of dust, an old painting of some old scary literature imagination hanging by the wall, portraits of a family who use to live there and out of nowhere, a story about their death came out. But then again, never to experience the view outside the window of the room overlooking a beautiful pond, decorated with flowers, sitting by on its side, the beautiful wooden floor made from the finest wood to be found there, and all the beautiful paintings, placed around the big scary literature imagination just making it one of the most beautiful room of its present time.

A space was meant to be felt by the user, in many ways possible. Some may never really look by walking by each day at the office lobby, every small detail will come out and if it doesn’t make the passer by more in love with it, in the sense of comfortable, you know one who actually works there won’t find it to be either.

The expression of space is thought as a basic design. An interior designer knows well enough about the qualities inside, but to be a complete designer, one have to know the feeling of the inside from outside as well. How does a space express a single thought of one who lives in it?

I live in a country where almost every space will always be considered boring, dead, lifeless, or even not significant at all. But then looking back at the past will make it considerably good as the old shop houses have so many significant values as to how it express the time period of their present.

Expressionism is the way of people expresses their own self through tonnes of different medium. In the architecture world however, it is considered to be very well overboard as architect is trying to create, or express their own self thought into a space, a building where it was meant to be publicly used. And so the people will reacts in many different way, judging, only that without any specific reasoning as they may not even know how to express their feelings. But then again, the kind of work will always be the talk of the future, in a bad or even in a good way. But that’s for the future to decide. As towards the end, to express the current present will always be important to show how is it like now, and how indifferent it is from the future’s present.

As I write this part of the story, I just got back from Bandung, Indonesia. I spent 4 days of nothing but such experience. What does architecture mean there, why does architecture there the way it is today? On what cause does it deliver, just cause by chance every parts of architecture is eventually destroying, and we as the architects destroy it by some means that it will eventually bring some meaningful story behind it. Though you might strongly rejects the destroying parts of architecture by saying the architects will always create, I strongly reject the point where we actually create something but instead destroying some parts and replacing it with something else.

Somewhere lays the words sustainable in the world of architecture nowadays. But let’s take a look in what way architecture are sustainable. On the way the site was picked, the way the studies was made, the tools used for making the design, the paper to draw, the lights and hours spent on the projects, the materials used way afar from the site, the construction of the building or just maybe the way it is used. On which part of it the sustainability tally with all the process, and as such is for the architect or maybe the politician to decide.

Somehow we forget what is important and what is not. The people, the money, or maybe the true form of art and science. We always, in our prime studies day talk about the people instead of the money but does that really happen? On which level do we really got to talk about our opinion instead we listen to someone else’s opinion. Some lacks the extra feel of enthusiasm towards the world of architecture.

The history being told said that the old architects of the world creates a building which resembles the god’s house, the palace of where lies eternal love, the undeniable perfection of art, the ultimate social place for the riches, the ever comfortable place to live under extreme weather condition, and many more but does that still exist in the modern architecture?

What does modern architecture lacks? The old architects were thinkers, are we not thinkers too? What kind of role model should we follow if we think the past thinkers are useless? Will there be any kind of thinkers acceptable if we really give a deep thought on what was said, given by the old humanity. I always doubt every speech given in any kind of form but never do I reject. As to reject is to not think, blindly denying everything and I myself will try ever so hard not to fall that low. As to not think makes you stupid in every way possible. But still it’s hard not to reject as we were thought to be that way.

Are we as students really are learning a dying subject of life matter? I am still a student but I shall say the only ultimate reason of which I love architecture is only because it makes me think more than before. The ultimate fun of it is when two minds collided, but never to reject, accepting every views of point, and at the end of the fun, the mind become not old or the same but a new. And as the process continues it will grow. No two minds will ever think alike in any way possible but as the thinkers think, eventually it will turn out to be the same in different ways.

This is the first of maybe many more to come. This is a notation of a student point of view, of which experience may not be much but a story yet to be noted as a point of view, not more and nothing less. An architecture student has yet to be tested for the ability to discuss philosophy as he might not be good enough.

We might as well know that the world we live in judges things a lot. In many ways possible, never to accept, always rejecting the new ideas, way too comfortable living in the past, recognizing the present by yesterday and the future will always be the history. But of all this there are some countries, that offer free education, the higher ups who pay taxes, people who eats the things they grow, a newspaper that discuss instead of telling how people what to think.

Of all that and you wonder what does that have anything to do with architecture? A friend of mine defines architecture as the significant to everything that we do. What else can it be in the form of art? An art will always be valued by the very significant of it. But as we all know that architecture is the art and science of buildings or, so to say the art of playing with form, space, and order. What is architecture exactly? If art is nothing but significant, and science on the other hand, is the truth of everything that is happening around us, what does both combined mean? The significance of everything that is true?

The only way to be in the world of architecture is to think about everything, to relate every pieces of information, political, economic, social value, environment, animals, rain, sun, wind, and many more to create a perfectly comfortable, if not, artistic piece of building. Or it can be something more but never less.

For now do we even think of why architecture matters?

As a student in a local university, I often think of how the international architecture school works. Do they have the kind of system as we do? This is not to debate about the laws of university but we do not even have the freedom to be self-express of whom we really are. Always being limited to what we can or cannot wear. Does that even matter to the eyes of the young students? What does wearing what we want have to do with architecture anyways? I would say none but it does have effect to how we think. As I said earlier architecture is about the absolute way of thinking. How can we even think without first having the chance to express our-self?

I might not be the brightest student in my age of living but I have a lot of question. Ridiculous in many ways but still what is a question but to have a better understanding of a certain subject. Why is architecture dead?

A misconception of why does it even matter? To what sort of value must it reach to make it alive again? Towards what way can the values rises? This is not about the materials, the construction, the drawings, or the architect themselves. This is about the way we think. How do we even value something? From a student point of view towards another.
